What, exactly, does an officiant do?

I've heard this question quite a bit. An officiant, also known as a minister, reverend or celebrant, leads your wedding ceremony.

By definition, a wedding officiant is someone who performs a legal marriage ceremony, and that person must be ordained.

First, an officiant speaks with a couple before the wedding to get a feel for the couple and their history to learn more about them. They will ask you questions like "Where did you meet?" and "How long have you been together?" or "What do you like most about your fiance?" These questions are geared toward getting to know you so the officiant can create a personalized ceremony to fit the you and your relationship.

Once they get some personal information from the couple, the officiant will then create a ceremony based on religious preferences and requests. The couple may want to include bible verses, romantic poems or special readings by family members. I've also seen couples include their pets or children in the ceremony. Sand ceremonies or candle lightings are also great additions to a ceremony.

Many couples opt to have the officiant present at their rehearsal. I highly recommend this, as it gives me a chance to meet the couple and a few of the key players such as parents, the Maid of Honor and Best Man. Think of the rehearsal as a practice before the big game. Everyone finds out where they are supposed to be and when, they get to practice getting into their places and they find out how the ceremony will proceed.

The officiant will arrive early the day of the wedding. During the ceremony, they will follow the ceremony (everything practiced the day of the rehearsal) and deliver a beautiful, heart-warming speech that everyone, especially the special couple, can relate to.

Finally, the officiant will facilitate the signing of the wedding certificate with the couple, one or two witnesses and themselves. They then send it in to the county.

You are what? Wedding How To / Instructional

So the BIG moment finally arrived. Your fiance (can you believe I just said fiance???) popped the question, and you are just so excited that you can't stop smiling.

Then, it hits you. Oh. My. God. I have to PLAN a wedding? What do I do? Where do I get started? There are just so many little details!

For those of you that need a place to start, I have compiled a list of a few things to do to get your started.

1. Get a folder and write in big black letter (or fancy scrapbooking letters and symbols for you craft folk) "WEDDING FOLDER" and use it to put receipts, wedding vendor business cards and brochures outlining packages, coupons, wedding scrapbook ideas, money owed and paid, as well as any other ideas you come across for dresses, locations, design, etc, etc.

2. Figure out your budget. Sure, we'd all like to have an unlimited budget to get the $20,000 dress and $500 shoes, but for most of us, that isn't a possibility if you don't want to max out your credit cards and be paying them back when your children (gasp!) go to college. Do some research to see how much you can afford, and start pricing out venues and vendors. In my opinion, the majority of your budget should be set aside for food at the wedding and photos (VERY important).

3. Pick your wedding party. Remember, it's your day. Choose people that will support you and help you through the process.

4. Pick a date. Then, reserve your venue. You will need to do this before you do anything else, because this may determine which vendors you need. From there, start pricing and reserving your vendors as soon as possible. The big ones are the officiant, photographer, DJ, caterer (many venues will provide), flowers and dress order. Send "save the dates."

6. Attend a bridal fair. For those of you in or around the Antelope Valley, plan to attend the AV Fairgrounds Bridal Fair on February 19, 2017 and the Bellisma Bridal Fair in Valencia on February 26, 2017.

Are you ready to purchase your Marriage license? Wedding General Party Tips

The marriage license is valid for 90 days. I suggest you get your license about 45 days prior to the wedding. The process is very simple and takes about ½ hour. You may complete the application on-line (EMAIL me and I will send you the website of the county where you want to purchase your marriage license). Payments (About $80-check the County website for pricing) can be made in cash, check or money order. If paying by check, valid IDn i.e. driver's license of the signer is required and must be presented at time of request.
Both the bride and groom must be present and produce "Proof of Identity" and age documents, such as a driver's license, passport or alien resident card. Photo and age verification is mandatory. A birth certificate or baptismal record may be presented along with picture form identification. All documents must be in English. Documents in any other language must be submitted with an English translation by a certified translator (call me if you need a translation as my office can do this for you).
A blood test and health certificate are not required to obtain a marriage license.
There is no residence or citizenship status requirement.
Applicants must be unmarried. A previous marriage is valid until the final date of dissolution. Contact the County for additional details.
