The 4 M's of a Photo Montage for your Wedding! Wedding How To / Instructional

The 4 M’s of creating a Photo Montage for Your Wedding!

I honestly believe the old adage about a picture being worth a 1,000 words. Like music, photos can transport you to places and times and wash you in cherished memories. A photo montage, especially one for a wedding, is meant to do just that! It’s intended to illustrate the beginning, the middle, and finally the sweet culmination of two people joining as one.

If you are planning to have a montage at your wedding, you may want to keep the following in mind. Start planning early. It takes a lot of time to sift through hard drives, scrapbooks, and shoeboxes full of pictures. Try to be objective when you are selecting shots for your montage. The picture of you and your siblings walking hand-in-hand on the beach may be one of your favorites, but is it right for this show…your show. Do you really want the 7th grade school picture of you in your braces on a bad hair day? It shows a point in time, but unless that was the day you and your intended first laid eyes on each other, it may not add much to your story.

This is where the M’s come into play.

Memories are triggered photos, so it’s best if you can select pictures that are of good quality. If the picture is so distorted that you would be the only one to recognize who is in the photo, it might not be right for the montage. Select photos that mean something to you. Photo shows of this nature typically have some pictures of people growing up and progressing to your wedding day, but this is your show, and the content is your decision.

Milestones are defined as significant or important events in someone’s life. Your wedding montage should be about significant and important events in your life that possibly put you on the road to being a couple. Did you meet in grade school, college, at work, at the corner pub? Was your best date at a Halloween party or a picnic in the park – choose pictures that depict how your love grew.

Music is the third M. The music you select can make a statement on its own, or just be a nice accompaniment to your show. When you select a song, really listen to all the lyrics to ensure it is appropriate. Most of the time, you can use portions of a song, so communicate with your show producer about what can and cannot be done pertaining to audio.

Minutes might not be an issue depending on how and when you plan to show the montage. Some couples show a continuous loop throughout the cocktails. Others only show it during the rehearsal dinner, while many couples choose to make it a part of the reception and showcase it. Your decision with regard to viewing may be dictated somewhat by the venue, so remember to add that to your checklist. If you do plan to show it during your reception, the minutes are important. Your wedding guests are thrilled to be there as a part of your special day, but a show that is too long and has twenty pictures of you at your dance recitals could be a bit much.

More than anything, if you decide you want to do a montage, plan ahead. Make sure the producer you select will work with you on changes and editing until you get the show you want. Sitting back and watching the faces of your guests as you show the montage can be just one more wonderful moment on your big day, so have fun with it and enjoy the process.
