Dance Contests: Stimulus Package for Party Fun All Events General Party Tips
Just like the TV show, American Idol, created interest in singing and singing contests, Dancing with the Stars is creating interest in ballroom dancing and dance contests. A dance contest is a good way to stimulate dance participation at a party. The contest could be done at the early part of the event or mid way through the event to give guests a break in the entertainment.
We set up the dance contest by asking the party guests to sign up as 2-person dance teams. We register the first four 2-person teams. All the other guests will be “judges”, and they will have the opportunity to “vote” for their favorite dance teams through their applause. Ask your DJ to mix dance music for diverse popular dances. Part of the fun of the dance contest is that the contestants will not know what type of dance will be next. For example, dance teams who may be good at dancing a tango may need to dramatically switch their dancing style to dance to the next unexpected music which may be a swing dance. The judges will be asked to judge not only the dancers’ ability but also their flexibility to quickly adapt to different types of dances.
Three to four diverse dance songs will be played for each round and voting will be done at the end of each round such that one dance team will be eliminated from the competition. An eliminated team becomes part of the audience to judge the remaining teams. Thus, with four dance teams, three rounds of competition will be done, with the possibility of 12 different types of dances. After each round of competition, the audience is asked to vote for their favorite dance team by their applause. A sound pressure level (SPL) meter can be used to compare the audience responses for each team. The entire contest should be planned to be about 15-20 minutes in duration.
Voting is done to select the winner between the final two teams after the last round of competition. The winning team with the loudest audience applause is named the champion team, and small prizes are given to the winners. Everyone in the audience is immediately invited to stand up and come to the dance floor, and the winning team leads some type of group dance such as the “Cha Cha Slide”. The result of the dance contest is that all the guests are up and dancing, and they will have pleasant memories about how much fun they had at your party.
