Planning an event can be a chore indeed. Questions such as will a band or DJ best suit our needs and how do I justify a fair price are surely at the forefront of your list of concerns. I suggest you weigh the suggestions below while considering your options. There will be many companies competing for your business. Make sure you chose an entertainer you’re comfortable with and who has a proven track record of successfully executing the type of event you are hosting.
POINT 1: Cost
Inevitably, the first question posed by someone researching their entertainment options is “How much do you charge?” Hosting an event can be costly and we all have a budget to work within. If you do your homework, you will discover that the cost for a mobile DJ entertainer in Central Ohio can range from $200.00 to well over $3,000.00 for a 4 to 5 hour event, the latter being on the extreme end. What’s in a price? As has always been the case, you get what you pay for. If quality, professionalism, experience, and having a great time with friends and family are important at your event, the extra investment will pay big dividends. Ask the big questions: What do I get for my investment in your services? How do you justify your price? If I retain your services, are you easy to get in touch with and will you provide unlimited and complementary consultations? Can you personalize and add touches to my event?
Research reveals that 80 to 90% of the success of your event is based solely on the entertainment. Given this statistic, entertainment is typically the last item considered when hosting an event. If thousands of dollars are ultimately allocated to your event, but the wrong entertainment option is secured, the whole event will be perceived as a failure as both you and your guests will remember how much or how little fun they had. Build rapport with a prospective entertainer and get a strong feel as to whether he or she has your best interest at heart, and remember, a good DJ will invest many hours behind the scene in preparation for your special event. A good rule of thumb is to budget at least 10% for your entertainment.
POINT 2: Customer Service
A good entertainer and true professional will make communication with you a top priority and will respond to your phone calls and emails promptly. An entertainment contract will also be in place stipulating what you can expect.
POINT 3: Experience in the Craft
A sharp saw cuts better than a dull one. Nothing tops the experience and knowledge one acquires through years of practicing their craft. If your DJ is well versed in the type of event you are hosting and they have a proven track record in the form of testimonials and/or word of mouth, the likelihood of your event being a success exponentially increases. Your event will only be as successful as the planning that goes into it. Solid planning and experience go hand I hand.
POINT 4: Music
While many DJ’s will showcase the size of their music library, don’t be too quick to be impressed by whatever this staggering number might be. In reality, a DJ can play between 15-17 songs per hour, which means the vast majority of music in most entertainers libraries will never be projected through the speakers in a 4-6 hour time frame. Most importantly, make sure your DJ will have the music you want played and is willing to be flexible in accommodating all of your music needs. This may include taking requests from guests, providing you with a song book, adhering to a play list you create for your entertainer, or any combination. A true professional will also honor your do not play selections and will avoid unedited songs if desired.
POINT 5: Tools of the Trade
Quality equipment and backup gear are important and a reputable DJ will recognize the importance and value high grade gear bring to your event. Remember, however, the gear makes up only the tools of the trade. These tools will be better served in the back of the van if you don’t have a well versed, knowledgeable, and professional entertainer at the helm.

The BBB will supply you with all complaints that a consumer has filed against that company you are considering to hire for your event. Any company can supply you with good references that they pick. That is why I always tell my potential clients to call the BBB on any company that they are considering to hire.
