The “Do Not Play List”…NEVER say never! Wedding General Party Tips
I just finished reading an article on a well-known bridal site listing songs the author felt should NEVER be played at a wedding. And it was all I could do NOT to comment. So, I’ll use my personal forum to vent my particular feelings on this subject.
In my opinion, any song that gets your family and friends out on the dance floor SHOULD be played. There is a time and a place for ALMOST any song, corny or not. The “YMCA’ is listed as a no-no, yet it was requested just last week by The Groom’s family. It was enjoyed by all. “The Chicken Dance” was also played and got representatives from all age groups out on the floor. Since small children are often times on the guest list, it’s a special time when they can join in on the dance floor with adults and have fun.
Line dances were not listed, but oftentimes a bride will tell me they don’t want to have them played. Why not? As many times as I get to line dance in a year (probably close to 50), I never get tired of it. A lot of guests at a wedding look forward to being able to line dance. I’ve even taught a line dance or two, just to get people “involved”.
The only songs that should be on your “do not play list” are songs with overtly offensive lyrics, break-up songs (happy thoughts at a wedding, please!) or songs associated with an unhappy memory. I have avoided playing “The Anniversary Waltz” if I know that someone in the crowd has lost a long-time marriage partner and will be upset.
A good DJ will listen to your ideas and plan a reception that works for YOU. But always keep in mind that your guests want to have fun, too! Maybe “Stayin’ Alive” IS cheesy and DOES say “Disco”. Why take the fun away from your guests who enjoy having a good time with it? YOUR tastes can always be incorporated into the music that is played during the 4-5 hours of your reception. With over 50,000 songs to choose from and more added weekly, we can find a blend of styles and genres that appeal to everyone in attendance. And if someone chooses “The Chicken Dance”, so be it. It just might just end up making a memory.
