How To Shop For and Hire A DJ
A DJ, or your choice for entertainment for your event should be something that you put a lot of thought into. Price should be only a small part of the decision. Cheaper is not always better, and more expensive is not always better either. Should you choose a DJ, a 4 or 5 piece band, or a duo? That all depends on what you want to provide for your guests. You should also ask a lot of questions. Get referrals from others – photographers, florists, caterers, facility managers, etc. When you talk to the prospective band or DJ, ask for references of people that they have worked for, specifically weddings. There is a lot of difference in a club or party DJ and a wedding DJ. As a DJ, my experience has been that a good DJ, (one who knows weddings), will overall do a better job for what you will probably want. The reason, most DJ’s have a wide selection of music, whereas most bands and other live acts have a limited song selection to choose from. Also, many bands do not have a “front” person to make your announcements in a professional manner. There are exceptions, of course. Just ask about how they would handle it, and to give you an example. That way you can hear how they sound when making your announcements.
Also when ‘shopping’ for a DJ, ask if they are a service that will provide you with a DJ, or if the person you are speaking with will be the one to perform for you.
As far as the price, find out how they price it, so there are no surprises. Many DJ’s will give you a flat fee, some have hourly rates. Plus tip in many cases.
For weddings,if your ceremony is anywhere other than in a church, ask if your entertainment choice can handle that. I provide sound for ceremonies often, even on the beach where there is no electricity. I have invested in a sound system with a rechargeable battery pack complete with wireless mics and music capabilities so that I can go anywhere for your ceremony. I also help coordinate the entire event.
It is also important to reserve your choice as soon as possible. Some bride’s guides may suggest 3 or 4 months in advance, but the one’s who perform the most will most likely be booked solid within that 3 or 4 months. I book some dates over a year in advance. When you do decide on who you will use, make sure that you pay some sort of deposit. Most states require ‘something of value’ be exchanged (like money) when an agreement is made or a contract signed to make it a legally binding agreement.
Good Luck.
