Helpful Articles from Professional Belcamp DJs
How To Select The Best DJ For Your Event All Events How To / Instructional
With so many choices and so many entertainers boasting that they are the best, picking the right Baltimore DJ can be a daunting task. Hopefully after reading this article, you will have a better understanding on what to look for and what questions are the most relevant when hiring your DJ. Let’s first address the most important factors to consider. Credibility is clearly at the top of the list. Can you trust this person with the responsibilities of such an important day? Over the years, I have spoken to a countless number of brides who wanted to make sure that I am a seasoned veteran who can provide the experience level needed to handle any situation. Another important factor is connection. Price, top of the line equipment and a large advertising budget doesn’t matter if you don’t get a positive feeling that ”this is our DJ”. It’s imperative that you personally interview each prospected DJ and come prepared with pertinent questions that will help you narrow down your search. Do yourself a favor and meet with them face-to-face. Discussing your event over the phone should be the first step, however you should take it to the next level for those who pass the introduction phase. During this meeting, take note if they are making the conversation around you and your vision, and not how great they are. Reputation should round out this list. Do they have legitimate letters, e-mails and website postings to back up their claim? Be a little wary of some of those wedding oriented websites containing feedback from previous brides. Some (certainly a small amount) allow anyone to log-in and write a review. That is even if they have never been to an event where this DJ was involved. Many DJ’s live by a professional code of ethic and would never deceive you. Just make sure that you take ALL of these factors into consideration. Should price be important? Of course, however it should not be the most important. You’ll want a DJ that offers a fair rate for their service, and this may not necessarily be the lowest price. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “you get what you pay for”. Like anything else, there are many types of DJ’s, and no one is exactly the same. If you were able to purchase your dream car at a reasonable price, would you drive it off the lot that day? Or, would you look for the least expensive car and hope that it rides smooth and doesn’t break down a mile down the road? Be careful when you consider price as the top reason for hiring that service. So in reality, what should a good wedding DJ cost? Prices will range from $700 – $1,300 depending on day of the week (Saturday is the most popular day), time of the day, month of the year (November, January and February are the slowest months and best for competitive rates) and any additional elements such as lights, fog and/or extra equipment. I would be a little concerned about a DJ that claims they have several years of experience, an extensive list of music and highly regarded as a top DJ … and are asking $400 for a 4 or 5 hour reception. What questions should you ask? 1.Will you be the DJ at our wedding? Some DJ’s sub-contract others. Make sure that the person you are interviewing is the person that will be your DJ. 2.How long have you been a DJ? 3.How many weddings do you average per year? 4.Do you have references? 5.Will you book another event on the same day as my wedding? 6.Will you be the emcee for our reception? 7.How will you dress? 8.What time will you arrive at the reception site to set-up your equipment? 9.Do you bring backup equipment? 10.Will you take requests from our guests? 11.How involved should I be in the planning of the dance music? 12.Will we meet or speak again before my wedding? 13.Will you provide a written agreement securing our event in your schedule? 14.What happens in the case of an emergency? Do Not Ask…. Can we see you at another reception? (Your DJ should answer no to this question. How would you like it if they invited strangers to your reception. Professional DJ’s should never use your event as a marketing tool to gain other clients.) I hope this article will help you in the selection process. Don’t stress and keep it simple. Just ask the right questions and listen to how they respond. You’ll know when you find the right DJ.
