Don't Play Music List Wedding True Stories
While every bride dreams of her special day and she envisions a series of songs that embody the thoughts, feelings and experiences of her relationship, her Dj is planning a series of songs that have brought sentimental and emotional responses from wedding parties and guess of reception past. Although 99% of the time this formula adds up to a great experience for all, the following two horror stories will hopefully enlighten you to the fact that poor communication with your DJ can spell disaster for your reception.
In both of the following situations the Bride and Groom did not fill out my pre-reception questionnaire and refused to make time for an interview before their event.
In 2002 I was invited to provide entertainment for a wedding reception on a rural farm. After setting up and waiting a short while, the bride, groom, and most of the wedding party and guest “rolled in” on motorcycles.
In an attempt to cater to this rough and rowdy crowd, I played the Lynard Skynard ballad “Simple Man”, which I have found to be a sure crowd pleaser among the two-wheelin’ clientele.
About twenty seconds into the song I found myself confronted with five very large leather clad men asking that I stop the song immediately. Within seconds I had some Steppenwolf rolling, smiles among most of the crowd, and Harley Davidson himself explaining that the song I had selected was played at the groom’s grandfather’s funeral less than two weeks before.
Last Summer I set up at a local reception hall where I often play. This was the ideal even, beautiful cake, beautiful l, bride, beautiful decorations, and a beautiful selection of music sent to me in advance by the bride and groom.
All was well, until a guest asked that I play “All My Life” by KC & Jojo., in dedication to the newlyweds. This sentiment would have been very sweet and appreciated by the bride, except that this was the song the bride shared with her first husband as their fist dance.
Again,. I faced a very large man (they always send the big guy) requesting that the song be stopped and I was soon scrambling to find a suitable disc to throw in while I figured out what was going on.
Even prior to these events I included a question in my pre-event questionnaire, requesting a list of songs that are absolutely. NOT to be played. I have since revised the question to include specific examples to assure I do not wind up in a similar situation in the future.
The moral of this story is always take every opportunity to communicate your needs to the DJ, Even more importantly, if you DJ does not give you the opportunity to provide this information, make a list on your own and be sure that it is delivered to all members of the entertainment staff.
