Tips for Hiring a Professional Indianapolis DJ
Factors You Have to Consider When Hiring Indianapolis Disc Jockeys
Indianapolis disc jockeys are the right people you need to make your special Indianapolis occasions very memorable and unforgettable. Indeed, finding the Indianapolis disc jockey is important to assure the fun and excitement on your occasion. Choose the right Indianapolis DJ and you’ll find yourself enjoying an event that you promise you’ll never forget.
Here are the things you have to consider when looking for an Indianapolis disc jockey:
(1) Insurance
Security first before anything else. You always have to put the safety of your guests ahead of anything else. Indeed, responsible Indianapolis disc jockeys always carry with them a liability insurance policy to safeguard their business, as well as their clients. Because they travel from time to time, their work needs protection against liabilities. When making transactions with your Indianapolis disc jockey, see to that you ask a copy of their liability insurance.
(2) Sign a contract
Confirm your transaction by signing a contract. Always see to it that you seek a written agreement before paying an initial balance, which is 25 percent of the total service charge. If you are looking for a specific entertainment, see to it you spell it out in the contract.
(3) Check their professional equipment
Quality audio-visual equipment reflects quality Indianapolis service. Check the equipment of your clients and verify if they got it from legitimate dealers. Remember, however that the talents of a disc jockey do not fully rely on the equipment. Equipments are only tools in producing a more quality sound.
(4) Choose a fulltime entertainer
If you have the opportunity, it would be best you go for fulltime entertainer. Your party will get better attention for details and more time in planning compared to hiring a part time entertainer. A full time disc jockey usually gives 30 hours a week in events planning, even though it only appears that you’re paying him for about four hours. A fulltime disc jockey usually conducts consultations, purchases, edits, and mixes music, and does other endeavors, like organizing it for the better.
(5) Observing the right etiquette for the event
A professional Indianapolis DJs will also listen to and assist clients in conceiving the event. Usually, disc jockeys work as event coordinators, emcees, organizers, and music players, jobs that are very important for the success of an event.
(6) Punctuality
At least an hour before the event starts, your disc jockey should arrive so he could set up the equipment and be in place when the guests start to arrive.
(7) He should play requests
A flexible Indianapolis disc jockey always listens to suggestions and gives feedback on your choice of music. He also accepts guest requests and see to it that guests are given importance and proper attention throughout the event.
(8) Appropriate attire
Wearing the right attire that suits the occasion is a way of showing professionalism at work. Let your Indianapolis DJ know the attire that you expect him to wear. If the occasion has a dress code or theme, tell him in advance so he could come up well-groomed.
(9) Membership to professional organization
We consider membership to professional organizations last of the factors because it doesn’t necessarily mean that an Indianapolis deejay is great in his work if he is a member of one. However, we still find it important that an Indianapolis DJ be a member of an organization because it indicates his intention to learn, grow, and be at par with other Indianapolis deejays. Attending seminars and conventions and joining workshops could gear a disc jockey towards attaining professional growth, which is vital if he wants to stay competitive in the market. How can you tell a Good DJ from a Bad DJ? Wedding General Party Tips There are tons of choices in the phone book for DJ. There are even more on the internet. How do you pick a good DJ out of this pool of unknown? Think about it. There is no bar exam to call yourself a DJ. Anybody with an iPod can technically call themselves a DJ.
Consider that the fact that a typical wedding reception can cost anywhere from $5,000 - $50,000. Months of planning goes into this single day event. The entire family is present along with all of your friends. Then when the action is to begin you find out that you hire the wrong DJ company. Too late! Guess what people will remember from that event. Yep! That’s right, the DJ was awful!
If you have an event that you have spent hard earned money on you want the entertainment to be on point. The DJ entertainment is the focus of you event. So all the time an effort planning and putting together the event is now in the hands of this person. Make sure that you are getting the experienced guy in the company and not bait and switched to the NEW GUY! All DJs are not created equal, even within the same company.
Don’t gamble, look for experience first, then look for reasonable rates.
Rule #1 --> Always check references for a DJ you plan on hiring for your special event. Ask them to provide you with 3 recent clients phone numbers, then call them. You want a person with experience in the type of event that you are having. Ask them a few questions. Here are a few examples.
• Was the DJ on time? • Was there a clear contract? • How would you rate this dj on his performance 1-10 • Did he make all the announcements and coordinate all of your events. • Was the DJ FUN? • Did the DJ take requests? • What type of event did this DJ do for you? Was it a wedding reception? • Could you understand the DJ on the microphone? • Was there anything you didn’t like about this DJ? • Was the DJ Dress appropriate for the event? • Did the DJ Company respond to your communications promptly by phone, or email? • Did the DJ meet with the bride and groom in advance of the event? If not why not? • Did anybody meet with the bride and groom in advance of the event? If so who was it? • Were the planning forms provided and were they easy to understand? • Was the equipment used professional grade or was it an IPOD hooked to some home speakers?
If they can't or give you some excuse that should be a red flag. Maybe they haven’t performed 3 events in the recently or they are not sure what their clients would say about them. We would be glad to put you in touch with any of our recent clients on our list. Our clients have already stated that they would not mind speaking to a future client on our follow up feedback forms mailed out after every event. You should hear what they have to say! Many many rave reviews over the years!
# 2 Does price indicate a good DJ? NO! Definitely not. You can pay $1200 for a DJ and still get an amateur. Truth is that there are more bad DJs than good ones. They are out there in the clubs and in the yellow pages. There is no way to tell based on price that your entertainer will be able to handle all of the details of your event flawlessly. We have heard numerous horror stories from brides, parents, and friends of DJs showing up late, botching announcements; I have personally witnessed a high end wedding at a well known Indianapolis hotel where everything was perfect...except the DJ. At the front table stood a teenager with 2 realistic tape decks and a box of cassette tapes (true story). Apparently each tape had a prerecorded 3 song "set" on it. (yikes!) The bridal party announcement was stumble through in a nervous and hesitant voice. This was a well known Indianapolis based DJ service in the yellow pages.
On the other end if you price shop you can find some djs that are cheaper than others. You have got to ask questions here. Why they so cheap? What kind of equipment are they going to bring. Pro equipment cost money to purchase and maintain. If they bring a feeble sound system to your hall will your guest even be able to hear the music and announcements. We have had to cover events at the last minute due to cancellations by these low end operators. About once a year I get a call on the week of the event frantic because the DJ cant make it or that their vehicle broke down. Beware of too low of a price. As with anything else you tend to get what you pay for. Just because you are on a budget does not mean you cant get a good DJ. ApolloDJService.com offers all pro DJs coupled with correct sized sound system for your hall. So you get the same DJ personalities at an intimate reception as you would a 1000+ capacity event.
# 3 Can you get a hold of the DJ Service easily? This is an indicator of a professional company or a fly-by-night operation. If you constantly have to leave a voice mail, this could be a red flag if you do not get a prompt call back. Do you get a live person on the phone? Do you get quick responses to emails? You are looking for an open line of communication. You want a DJ Company that can work with you on your event, and is available to answer questions and listen to comments. Nothing will make a nervous bride more nervous than not having a phone call returned until 3 days later after leaving a voicemail on a machine.
#4 Does "PLATINUM" DJ mean I am getting a good DJ? Well, maybe...There are a lot of adjectives used to describe dj experience. In some wedding guides they term a platinum dj as a DJ with 10 or more years experience. The listings on a DJ Company website might even list them as platinum DJs, but you might still get a rookie that he is training. Truth is there is no standard definition here. Anybody can say they have XX years experience. Anybody can use the term platinum.
#5 Meet with the DJ! The best way to get a good DJ is to communicate with them, meet with them, read their emails. You should be able to get feel for their personality and get a sense that they KNOW how to do your event. Request a meeting before signing anything. Meet with your 3 favorite choices. Then decide. Professionalism will be readily noticeable. Did the DJ confirm the appointment? Did he show up late? Did he have refernces or a brag book with him? Did he give you an idea of how he operates or what to expect? Do you feel comfortable handing the event over to this person? Satisfy yourself and your due diligence will pay off! The elite DJs in Indianapolis will be courteous, on time, have references, answer your questions, and do everything they can to make your events a success!
#6 Go with a Recommended DJ! Your friends and family know a good DJ. If they were impressed and talk up the company, find out who they went with and the name of the DJ that handled the event. Word of mouth has been a powerful advertising method for us over the years. Every event we do seems to lead us to another event or 2. That is perpetual motion at its finest.
Hopefully this helps you plan your next event and get a good entertainer to go with it. Written by www.ApolloDJService.com of Indianapolis, IN
Alcohol service Hire a Bartender or DIY? All Events General Party Tips The Margarita King:
You could bake your own wedding cake, but would you? You could take your own wedding pictures, but would you? You could plan your own wedding (what a nightmare), but would you? You could make your own wedding dress, but would you? You would hire a professional for these services, so why would you act as your own bartender?
I am certain you have many friends that would be willing to mix drinks for you and you can find drink recipes all over the internet. However, which of your guests would you ask to miss out on the fun and activities to be able to mix drinks for everyone? In Indiana, you are required to hire a bartender if your party is in a public place and you serve alcohol.
Some think that bartenders only mix drinks, not true! Professional bartenders are trained to spot underage drinkers and fake IDs. We are also trained to recognize when someone has had too much to drink and how to handle this situation in a manner that does not cause a scene. Further, bartenders know which alcohols go best together and how much is too much. Have you ever gotten ill from a drink? If you put too much of certain alcohols in a drink you could actually make someone sick. For example, a concentrated liqueur like Triple Sec can make someone sick if more than a half ounce is used. To be a liqueur, the alcohol must be at least 20% sugar, but we are taking about a CONCENTRATED liqueur, think about how much sugar is in this one half ounce of Triple Sec. There are many other type of alcohol that if too much is used you could take the fun out of the party. Many people think that more alcohol in a drink makes for a better drink, not true, more alcohol can not only get you intoxicated faster, but most likely make the drink taste bad. When baking a cake, would you add more sugar to make it better? Instead of pouring more liquor, give them a better liquor and this will improve the quality of the drink. Instead of pouring McCormicks Tequila for a Margarita, use Jose Quervo or 1800, not more Tequila. These are things Professional Bartenders know how and why to do. A Chef once told me “A cook knows how, a chef knows why”, the same with Professional Bartenders.
In addition, did you know that in Indiana, if you serve a minor alcohol it is a Class A Misdemeanor and serving someone who is already intoxicated is a Class D Felony. In addition to criminal liabilities, there are Civil Liabilities as well. If you were to serve alcohol to someone that is already intoxicated you could be setting yourself up for Civil Actions. Suppose you serve someone and they leave your party, driving intoxicated, and on the way home they have an accident that injures or kills someone. The last person and/or place they were served could be held civilly liable. There have been legal cases where this has happened, with judgments in excess of ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS. These are just a few of the things Professional Bartenders are aware of and watch for. (Laws vary from state to state, call your local Alcohol Authority to check the Laws in your state).
Finally, a good professional bartender can be fun and funny. I know when I am behind a bar, I have a great deal of fun with those that come to me for drinks. Don’t get me wrong, when it comes to mixing drinks, I am all business, but when it comes to guests I am all fun and games. I have stated on many occasions “I can teach anyone how to mix drinks, I cannot teach anyone how to be a bartender” bartending is, like so many other professions, something that comes from inside your own personality.
So to answer our original question, Hire a Professional Bartender or do it yourself, you decide, base your decision based on the facts though. If you would make your own wedding cake, or take your own wedding pictures, then perhaps you could do it yourself. Bartenders are just as much professionals as any other professional that caters, plans, or entertains for parties. Hire the Professional Bartender, you’ll thank yourself later on, and so will your guests. Written by My Bar To You of Indianapolis, IN
