What to look for hiring a DJ Wedding How To / Instructional
People often ask, what should I look for in a good wedding Dj? Over the years, my answer has evolved. First of all lets look at the common types of Djs out there and what to expect from each.
Type A. the hobbyist, this person enjoys djing and usually has some home stereo equipment along with cds and possibly a laptop. Charges 100-200 dollars, will he show up? Will his equipment work? Does he know how to make the evening flow? Will he be dressed appropriately? Maybe. I wouldn't recommend a hobbyist for a wedding, They are fine for some parties where his performance is not critical.
Type B. the sub-contractor, this person does not own his equipment, he usually works for a pro Dj who will book the wedding, charge pro prices and then sub-contract this guy. This is fine if the pro Dj tells you about it, or better yet, you meet the sub-contractor. He is getting paid around 200-400 dollars from the pro Dj who's equipment he is using. This is a very common practice and is legal depending on the contract. My point here is, meet your Dj. Beware of sleazy Djs who imply they will Dj your wedding, but at the last minute send in a sub-contractor you have never met. This guy will show up, His skill level will vary greatly.
Type C. Part time single op. This person has evolved from a hobbyist by getting some experience and some pro equipment. His equipment is usually lower end, or very old, but enough to get by. He is what I like to call a rookie. He has done under 50 weddings and is starting to get good at it. Charges 100-200 dollars an hour
Type D. Full time single op. This person is earning a living as a DJ. He probably has several events a week. He has proper pro DJ equipment. He has a light show, and has done at least 100 weddings. He uses a contract. This person also has a reputation of doing a good job.
Charges 100-400 dollars an hour.
Type E. Full time multi-op. This person has the experience and infrastructure to do multiple weddings on the same day. He has pro equipment, and light show. He is a pro DJ, his skills are very good. He uses a contract. He or one of his people will show up. His sub-contractors may or may not be so good. This is why meeting your DJ is critical. Ask him if he is the person who will be doing your wedding, if he is not, ask to meet the DJ who will. Charges 200-500 dollars an hour or more.
Some Djs are going to be mad about me exposing trade secrets. I tell you this not to disrupt others business but to show you the importance of meeting your DJ. When you do meet your DJ, go with your gut. If he is late, sloppy and vulgar, move on. You are looking for a prompt, Sharp, professional.
When looking at price, I would suggest an approach of trying to get the best you can find in your market, and ask for a discount! You might be surprised.
