Don't Be A Statistic - Choose a Professional DJ/MC All Events General Party Tips

Jacob here, with Music On The Move DJ's; Florida's #1 Rated, Award-Winning DJ Entertainment Service. First, I know it can be difficult finding the best entertainment possible; especially on a budget. There are a lot of DJ's out there and it may appear that they offer the same thing for less; but this is usually not the case. Please keep in mind that there can be some major differences between DJ services. Over the years, I have heard all sorts of horror stories about clients choosing the wrong entertainment. A few are: DJ's not showing up on time, not showing up at all, double booking themselves, their DJ & Lighting set up is an unsightly mess, old lousy distorted/crackling sound system equipment, no back up equipment when there was a malfunction, cheap dance lighting or no dance lighting, effects lighting sitting on the ground or on top of speakers, poor microphone skills, not able to properly sequence the event, getting drunk at the event, hitting on guests, non-edited music, poor music library/selection, not able to "read" the crowd & pick good music, dressed inappropriately, hard to get a hold of, not very professional, didn't deliver as promised, etc...

Again, I understand that price can be an issue. However, in my experience, those who go with the lowest price, usually regret it afterwards. There are 2 quotes that I would like to share with you: Martha Stuart said, "The entertainment you choose for your wedding or party is responsible for 80% of the events success and the memories you will have for the rest of your life" (yet most people budget the least amount of their overall budget towards their entertainment). Another quote/statistic states: "85% of bride's, after their wedding, wish they spent more time researching and more money on their entertainment". That translates into 85% percent of bride's weren't happy with their entertainment and regret not going the extra mile.

Don't be a statistic! Even though on paper it may seem like one DJ is offering the same as what we offer; however, if you dig a little deeper and ask the right questions, you'll usually find that it is Night vs. Day. Ask any bride or wedding professional and they will agree that the only thing more important than entertainment in determining the success of your wedding reception is the meal. The selection of what kind of entertainment you want for the biggest (and probably most expensive) party you will ever host is an important decision and should not be based solely on price- you get what you pay for.

Many entertainment options are available, including DJs: live music (bands, orchestras, quartets); and do-it-yourself (DIY) entertainment. Decide which option is best suited for you, shop around, and book early.

Wedding DJs:
Wedding DJs are the most popular form of entertainment at wedding receptions. Professional DJs can range from quiet and laid back to interactive and high energy. DJs can handle the introductions, announcements, transitions, and help direct the flow of the evening’s event without breaks. Most DJs have a large selection of music and can go from one music genre to another depending on your guests and their requests.

Live music:
No question about it, live music has energy and vibe that is not possible by DJs. Everyone loves dancing to live music so expect a full dance floor. As with DJs, check out the band to see if their style of music (country, rock, tropical, etc) is what you are looking for. Bands typically require more space for setup, which can have an impact on the seating plan.

DIY (Do it yourself):
Usually a friend or relative who volunteers their services as a wedding gift to you; or the ‘iPod wedding’. If you’re wedding plans are for a small informal gathering at someone’s house, this may be the ideal situation for you. If you are planning a formal affair with catered food and dancing, it is better to hire professional entertainment. Wedding receptions are complex events that don’t just happen; they require teamwork from multiple businesses. The happiest day in your life is no place for on the job training.

Your entertainment needs to be next to the dance floor. Placing the dance floor in the center of the room and the entertainment in one corner might look nice but will prevent your entertainment and the dance floor from working off each others energy. It also means one side of the room will be very loud while the other side of the room won’t be able to hear anything.

Meet with your entertainment director before signing the contract and ask them:

Do they have a contract?
Do they carry liability insurance?
What will their attire be?
Who will handle all the introductions, announcements, and transitions to and from formal wedding events (family dances, dinner, cake cutting, garter & bouquet, etc)?
Are you expected to provide meals for the DJ or the band members?
Do they accept and play requests from your guests?
Do they have lighting for the dance floor?
If hiring a band- what will they do for music while on break?
If hiring a DJ, will you know who your DJ is when you sign the contract (what if the DJ that shows up is a bridesmaid’s ex)?

Whether you hire live music or a DJ, do your homework now to make sure the entertainment on your wedding day lives up to your expectations and provide you with the party you dreamed of.
